Sunrise from our camp site in Canyonlands.
We decided to go for a morning climb to get a better view of the Green River and the sunrise.
We had spotted some rocks on our way into the park that Adam insisted we stop and climb on our way out. We had to get up to that balancing rock in the distance that was dubbed "Wiley Coyote".
Up at the top.
It's hard to see, but there is a little black spec just to the right of the rock blocking the view of the road. That is the van.
"Wiley Coyote"
We found another balancing rock up there. That is all sandstone and is easily broken apart which is pretty crazy.
A view back down at road level.
One of the other activities on the agenda was to do some kayaking. We decided to try Lake Powell. When we got to Hall's Crossing we weren't really feeling the camp grounds, kayak rentals were on the other side of the Lake at Bullfrog Basin and we would have to take the ferry across and then back since it was out of our way to stay on the other side.
We hung around for a little while thinking about what we wanted to do, made some more burgers, then decided to cut our losses and head for Lake Havasu City.
Here's a large rock we scrambled up at Hall's Crossing.
Lake Powell.
Day 7: We rented some kayaks in Lake Havasu City and took off from Castle Rock.
We found a good spot to jump from.
Jeff had found some stories online about brain eating amoebas in Lake Havasu during the summer. Luckily this was November and the water was pretty cold because I definitely got some water up my nose on this one. So far so good though, I think.
We found some cool little caves to paddle through.
Loading up all the yaks.
Day 8: Joshua Tree National Park would be our next stop. Here are some wild jack asses we saw along the way.
Joshua Tree National Park, CA.
Climbing.
This is what a Joshua Tree looks like. I think it looks like the offspring of a palm tree and a cactus.
One of the boulder piles we climbed up had a bunch of passage ways and caves between the boulders to climb down through.
Back at the bottom of the pile.
Day 9: After Joshua Tree we headed back to Los Angeles, CA where Adam lives and I was flying back home from.
